چکیده

This paper outlines an infrared spectroscopic technique to measure the radial velocities of faint secondaries in known single-lined binaries. The paper presents our H band observations with the CSHELL and the Phoenix spectrographs and describes detections of three low-mass secondaries in main-sequence binaries: G147-36, G 164-67, and HD 144284, with mass ratios of 0.562± 0.011, 0.423 ± 0.042, and 0.380 ± 0.013, respectively. The latter is one of the smallest mass ratios derived to date. Subject headings: binaries: spectroscopic—infrared: stars—techniques: spectroscopic

A Spectroscopic Survey of Subarcsecond Binaries in the Taurus-Auriga Dark Cloud with the Hubble Space Telescope

We report the results of a spectroscopic survey of 20 close T Tauri binaries in the Taurus-Auriga dark cloud where the separations between primaries and their secondaries are less than the typical size of a circumstellar disk around a young star. Analysis of low-resolution and medium-resolution STIS spectra yields the stellar luminosities, reddenings, ages, masses, mass accretion rates, IR exce...

The Mass Distribution of Extra-solar Giant Planets and Spectroscopic-binary Low-mass Companions

Spectroscopic orbits have been reported for nine unseen companions orbiting solar-type stars with minimum possible masses in the range 0.5 to 10 Jupiter masses. We compare the mass distribution of these nine planet candidates with the distribution of low-mass secondaries in spectroscopic binaries and nd that they present two distinctive distributions. The borderline between the two populations ...

The Mass Distribution of Extrasolar Planet-candidates and Spectroscopic-binary Low-mass Companions

Spectroscopic orbits have been reported for nine unseen companions orbiting solartype stars with minimum possible masses in the range 0.5 to 10 Jupiter masses. We compare the mass distribution of these nine planet candidates with the distribution of low-mass secondaries in spectroscopic binaries. Although we still have only a very small number of systems, the two distributions suggest two disti...

Metal-poor Field Blue Stragglers: More Evidence for Mass Transfer

We report radial velocity studies of five candidate metal-poor field blue stragglers, all known to be deficient in lithium. Four of the five stars are single-lined spectroscopic binaries, with periods ranging from 302 to 840 days, and low orbital eccentricities, in agreement with similar behavior found for other blue straggler candidates by Preston & Sneden (2000) and Carney et al. (2001). The ...

The Formation of Cataclysmic Variables with Brown Dwarf Secondaries

The present-day formation of cataclysmic variables (CVs) with brown dwarf (BD) secondaries (0.013 M⊙ ≤ Ms ≤ 0.075 M⊙) is investigated using a population synthesis technique. Results from the latest, detailed models for BDs have been incorporated into the population synthesis code. The present-day orbital period distribution of zero-age CVs (ZACVs) that form with BD secondaries is calculated. Fo...
